Technical Writing for Modular Conveyor Belt Machinery

Intralox, headquartered in Harahan, Louisiana, specializes in modular plastic conveyor belts and related services and equipment.

Figure 1 Synopsis

The Quick Reference for the S2400 Notching Machine in Figure 1 below was the first document I worked on at Intralox. This was a trial-by-fire type of project. I was given instructions to locate the notching machine on the factory floor, figure out how to operate the machine, take photos of the operation, and bring all of the collected information back to my desk to begin crafting a Quick Reference. I learned quickly that asking questions would be vital to my success. After fumbling through the process by myself for a few moments, I returned to the office to get Jonathan to demonstrate the whole documentation process. Jonathan walked me through finding the machine, working the machine, and photographing the operations. Then, a considerable amount of time was spent training me in document creation using Adobe FrameMaker. This project took a few days total, but each successive Quick Reference project became a little easier as I learned the process. Note the design of the document. The Quick Reference documents were all based on a template built with FrameMaker. All of the subsequent Quick References that I completed for Intralox began with a blank template containing just the information that is necessary on all Quick References, including the title, headings, warnings, and cautionary text. Layout and font types are kept consistent, which limits the amount of formatting that the writer must do each time a new Quick Reference is created.

Quick Reference Guide

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Make it stand out.
